What teal pumpkins mean for trick-or-treaters

WASHINGTON - If some of your neighbors have teal pumpkins on the porch this Halloween, there is a good reason.

Food Allergy Research and Education spearheaded the Teal Pumpkin Project. It is a way to let parents know which houses provide non-food treats that are safe for children with allergies.

"Halloween is supposed to be a fun, community holiday. And this is one way to help show all of the kids in our lives that we care for them, and we want them to have a safe, fun Halloween experience," said FARE spokesperson Veronica LaFemina.

According to the organization, food allergies have increased tremendously over the past few years. The Teal Pumpkin Project is meant to help parents navigate through difficult times. The program is up and running in all 50 states and in several other countries.
