Washington Commanders’ Super Bowl wins: A look at the team’s past
WASHINGTON - The Washington Commanders are headed to the NFC Championship game after an outstanding regular season and playoff victories in Tampa Bay and Detroit. That puts them one step away from the big game!
Now the team’s toughest test – a battle in Philadelphia against the rival Eagles for a chance to play in the Super Bowl. This season is the farthest the team has advanced in more than three decades.
Here’s a look back at the franchise’s three winning Super Bowl championship seasons.
How did the turnaround happen?
What we know:
It’s the result of a complete organizational overhaul that began when controlling owner Josh Harris’ group bought the team from Dan Snyder in 2023 and then hired new general manager Adam Peters and coach Dan Quinn.
Have the Washington Commanders ever won a Super Bowl?
Washington’s football franchise has made three Super Bowl appearances and won three Super Bowl championships. All three of the title teams were led by Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs.
Their last one was Super Bowl XXVI during the 1991-92 season when they defeated the Buffalo Bills 37-24.
Quarterback Mark Rypien, running back Earnest Byner, wide receiver Art Monk and defensive stars Charles Mann and Darrell Green led the team to victory.
This win, and the team’s other two championships, were also powered by the ‘Hogs,’ a group of dominant linemen anchored by center Jeff Bostic, guard Russ Grimm, and tackle Joe Jacoby.
When was the Washington Commanders’ first Super Bowl win?
The team’s first big win came in Super Bowl XVII during the 1982-83 season when they defeated the Miami Dolphins 27-17.
That team’s offense was led by quarterback Joe Theismann, running back John Riggins, receiver Art Monk and the offensive line. The team’s defense was headed by Dexter Manley, Charles Mann, and Darrell Green.
When was the Washington Commanders' second Super Bowl win?
The team’s second trip to the big game was in Super Bowl XXII during the 1987-88 season, when the team defeated the Denver Broncos 42-10.
That offense was led by quarterback Doug Williams, receiver Art Monk and the offensive line. Manley, Mann, and Green led the defense.
They haven’t made it back to the Super Bowl since they last won in 1992, and Gibbs remains the only coach to have won Super Bowls with three different quarterbacks.
