VRE train strikes vehicle in Stafford County

No injuries were reported after a vehicle was struck by train along the tracks in Stafford County.

The accident happened at a rail crossing just after 6 a.m. near the intersection of Brent Point Road and Arkendale Road north of Brooke, Virginia.

Stafford Fire Chief Mark Doyle told FOX 5 that the occupants of the vehicle were able to safely exit before the Virginia Railway Express (VRE) train struck it.

The train was traveling along the Fredericksburg line. Commuters experienced delays upwards of two hours as shuttle buses were put into place.

The accident blocked access to and from the Brent Point / Widewater community which is located on a peninsula in the Potomac River.

The roadway was reopened and train service restored around 9 a.m. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
