You can volunteer to help build a playground honoring the lives of a mother and her two children killed when a plane crashed into their home in Montgomery County.

The City of Gaithersburg and the Where Angels Play Foundation are building a new tot lot play area at Griffith Park to celebrate the lives of Marie and her sons, 3-year-old Cole and 1-month old Devin Gemmell.

The three where inside their Gaithersburg home in December 2014 when a small plane trying to land at a nearby airport crashed setting their house on fire. Her husband, Ken, and the couple's 5-year-old daughter Arabelle were not home at the time. Three men aboard the plane, including the pilot, also died in the crash.

Ken and Arabelle are designing the playground and will serve as project chairs.

Volunteers can help from September 12 through the 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on September 15 at 11 a.m. Griffith Park is located at 29 South Summit Avenue, adjacent to City Hall.
