Unseasonably warm temps expected for Christmas week
WASHINGTON - Don't expect a white Christmas this year in the D.C. area. In fact, it will hardly feel like winter at all this holiday season in the nation's capital.
Unseasonably warm temperatures could set a record on Christmas Eve at 75 degrees and could have us at 67 degrees on Christmas Day. At this rate, we are on pace for one of the warmest Decembers on record.
Although many people are enjoying this weather, not everyone is happy about the absence of snow. FOX 5's Matt Ackland went to Liberty Mountain Ski Resort on Monday afternoon, and it was a ghost town. Hundreds of temporary employees are not working during what is normally a very busy time of the year.
But there is at least one bright side to this weather for consumers. Warm weather clothing is deeply discounted because not much of it is selling. FOX 5's Lena Burns spotted a coat for 80 percent off.
Forecasters say a strong El Nino is one of the reasons why we are feeling the warmth so late into the season this year.
