Topgolf Alexandria's lease at Kingstowne location ending

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Some Virginia golfers are teed off. The owners of a popular golfing spot in Fairfax County say they are being forced to relocate.

The reason? A big change in their lease and some new concerns from neighbors over noise.

Topgolf Alexandria is in Fairfax County's Kingstowne area.

"When I come over here, you have to wait in line for such a long time," said golfer Jose Estrada. "Very popular."

It is part driving range, part restaurant and part golf playground for its loyal customers.

"If you want to, you can come here and you can have a beer and swing a club, tune up your game, bring some friends, have a great time, listen to the music," said customer Murray Rupert.

"It's a little comradery and it's kind of like a bowling league almost," said Buddy Wilkinson.

But Topgolf Alexandria has hit a rough. At this week's Fairfax County Board of Supervisors meeting, it was announced Topgolf is ending its 25-year lease after ten years here at this location.

"This company is built around our guests," said Kevin Kraft, the director of operations at Topgolf.

He said while some neighbors have expressed concerns about live music at the venue, they have tried to work with homeowners who have moved in after Topgolf was already here.

"It's not who was here first," said Kraft. "We all have to live in Kingstowne together and we all have to get along together."

Despite all of this uncertainty, Topgolf Alexandria is still going ahead with a six-figure restoration project.

None of the neighboring residents would talk to us. But golfers had plenty to say.

"They all know it's here," said Rupert. "They know what the deal is before they move in."

"That's the risk when buy houses in and around here," said another Topgolf customer.

In the end, it might be a win-win for golfers. Topgolf said they want to stay in the area and build something bigger and better.

Topgolf's owners said it could be 2017 or 2019 before they have to move.
