St. Mary's College swimming coach faces child porn charges

A longtime swimming coach at St. Mary's College of Maryland has been arrested on child pornography related charges.

Andre Rudolph Barbins, 45, was taken into custody on Friday, and is charged with one count of child pornography and one count of displaying obscene matter to a minor. Investigators executed a search warrant at Barbins' home in Solomon, Md., and seized various digital media storage devices containing images of child pornography.

According to the school's website, Barbins has been the head swim coach there for nearly two decades, with 2015-16 being his 18th year. The site says he also serves as the aquatics director of the Michael P. O'Brien ARC Aquatics Center, and has been a member of the NCAA Division III Men's & Women's Swimming & Diving Committee since 2014.

Barbins' bio says he graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1993, and also coached at Washington College in Chestertown, Md. and the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn. before coming to St. Mary's. It also says he is married and has two daughters.

St. Mary's College of Maryland released the following statement about Barbins' arrest:

"St. Mary's College of Maryland learned that Andre Barbins, the College's head swimming coach, has been arrested. The College is taking all steps necessary to protect the safety of its campus and community, and is cooperating fully with law enforcement. Assistant Coach Hattie Schiavone has assumed coaching duties. As with all personnel matters, the College is unable to provide further comment."
