Springfield man arrested for attempting to abduct, sexually assault woman: police

A 30-year-old man was arrested in Springfield after police say he abducted a woman and attempted to sexually assault her.

What we know:

The incident happened in the 6700 block of Metropolitan Center Drive in Springfield just after 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 27.

What we know:

The female victim told police that she was walking home when an unknown man walked up to her. After briefly speaking with each other, the woman said the man grabbed her and attempted to sexually assault her. 

The victim fought the suspect off and ran away. Officers searched the area extensively but were unable to find the suspect. The victim sustained minor injuries.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Bureau took over the investigation and a composite sketch of the suspect was made. 

Suspect identified

What we know:

Investigators eventually identified the suspect as Yapheth Ably Emiru, 30, of Springfield. 

On Feb. 1, Emiru was charged with abduction with intent to defile, attempted sexual assault and stalking. He was transported to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center where he is being held without bond.
