SPRING SNOWSTORM: DC region hit with early spring snowstorm; refreezing concerns overnight
WASHINGTON - The D.C. region hunkered down for what has become the biggest spring snow to hit the nation's capital in decades. Now, as residents have started digging out, there are concerns of refreezing during the overnight hours into Thursday morning's rush hour commute.
The first part of the two-part winter weather system made its way across the D.C. area Tuesday bringing with it cold air, rain and sleet. On Wednesday morning, the heaviest of the snow fell to the north and west of D.C. Heavy, steady snow moved toward the District from the south during the later morning hours. The worst of the storm struck Maryland, Virginia and other parts of the D.C. metro area with snow between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. before exiting Wednesday evening.
WEATHER-RELATED SCHOOL AND BUSINESS CLOSINGS
It was record March 21st snowfall at Dulles International Airport as 4.7 inches fell there. However, while it was not record-setting, BWI Airport received 4.4 inches while Reagan National Airport saw 4 inches of snow.
The biggest jackpot areas came in Martinsburg, West Virginia, with 14.9 inches of snow while Bloomfield, Maryland, had the same amount. Westminster, Maryland received 11.5 inches of snow.
However, there is concern for refreezing overnight into Thursday. The weather conditions have already caused some school closings and delays in Virginia and Maryland for Thursday. Federal government offices in the D.C. area will open on a 2-hour delay. Employees do have the option of unscheduled leave of unscheduled telework.
However, bad news for D.C. Public Schools students. Schools in the District will open on time Thursday morning. (Check the full closings/delays list here as they come in)
