SPECIAL DELIVERY: DC area snow doesn't stop arrival of newborn babies

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - First responders were busy earlier this week while the snow, sleet and ice came down in the D.C. region. A couple of babies couldn't wait to enter the world and had to be born inside their families' homes in Montgomery County in Maryland and in Fairfax County in Virginia.

"He's on the phone with the midwife and I'm yelling, 'We're not going to make it!'" said Ashley Velez.

The birth plan went out the window when baby Gabriela decided it was time to make her appearance early Tuesday morning. The snow was coming down outside and driving was not an option. With the contractions getting stronger, they called 911 just in time.

"The EMTs showed up and probably three good rounds of pushes, she was here," Ashley said.

After Gabriela was born inside their Silver Spring apartment, the family was then transported to Holy Cross Hospital.

"It is such a cool story and we can't wait to tell her when she gets older," Ashley said.

Meantime, across town in the Alexandria part of Fairfax County, another group of first responders were called out to help the Hill family.

"I was thinking I don't want to have this baby in the car and the contractions were happening so fast, I was thinking I don't think we're going to make it," said the baby's father.

Fortunately, the ambulance was able to navigate the snow and sleet and team of paramedics delivered their baby girl in her parents' apartment as well.

"They were very good at making decisions and once they decided that they were not going to move me and we were going to have the baby right there, I felt a lot better about not worrying about having to go somewhere," the new mother said. "I felt like, 'Okay, I'm going to listen to my body now and it was time to push.'"

Storms often mean a busy night for delivery rooms, but whether it was something to do with barometric pressure or just coincidence, these little baby girls certainly gave their families a night to remember.

"I imagine every time [the baby] is in a rush to do something, I will be like, 'Just like the day you were born - always in a hurry,'" said the newborn's father.
