Song supporting DC statehood sung on lawn of US Capitol

WASHINGTON - Children and parents brought messages supporting D.C. statehood to the District over the weekend.

On Sunday, the group gathered on the lawn outside of the U.S. Capitol and sang a song from a recent episode of HBO's "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver."

The song mocks opposition to representation in Congress for residents of the District of Columbia.

In 2014, Congress held its first hearing on statehood for the District in 21 years. A bill introduced by Democratic Sen. Tom Carper of Delaware, however, is not expected to go anywhere.

Republicans have long opposed turning the District into a state.
