Sinkhole temporarily shuts down 6th Street nearby Verizon Center

WASHINGTON - A sinkhole caused traffic problems outside of Verizon Center Monday night.

D.C. police said they received calls about the sinkhole opening in the 700 block of 6th Street at around 6:30 p.m., which caused the roadway to close in both directions between E and H Streets.

A District Department of Transportation crew worked to temporarily cover the sinkhole to allow vehicles to resume driving on the street.

Johanna Carr sent FOX 5 a photo of her vehicle that got stuck in the sinkhole. However, several Good Samaritans were able to come to her rescue. She wrote, "Random strangers on the street helped me and pushed me out. I was fine and my car was fine. Gave me hope in the goodness of people."

It is unknown what caused the sinkhole.

A Washington Capitals game was being held at Verizon Center Monday night. Motorists were being advised to avoid the area and seek alternate routes.
