Silver Spring teen in critical condition after hit-and-run; driver located

Montgomery County police say the driver of a hit-and-run that critically injured a Silver Spring teenage pedestrian has been located.

Police found 17-year-old Quasim Williams lying on the side of the road on Columbia Pike nearby Tech Road after he was hit by a vehicle Monday night. He was taken from the scene to MedStar Washington Hospital Center and is in critical condition.

"At noon today, we were able to identify the driver involved in this hit-and-run collision," said Montgomery County Police spokesperson Cpl. Rebecca Innocenti. "We also have the vehicle in custody and will be examining that vehicle for evidence."

Police say they received a call from a car insurance company on behalf of the alleged driver, 53-year-old Sandra Carvalho of Burtonsville. Detectives interviewed her on Tuesday.

Investigators at the scene say Williams was crossing Columbia Pike when he was struck and the driver was driving northbound in a gray Honda Pilot.

Police do not have witnesses of the hit-and-run and the victim was only found when two Montgomery County police officers just happened to drive by and see him lying on the side of the road.

"Because of the nature of his injuries, detectives have not been able to speak to him at any great length," said Innocenti.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the hit-and-run and will confer with prosecutors about possible charges against the driver.

"The law states that you must stop when you're involved in a collision," said Cpl. Innocenti. "And certainly you're required to render aid or attempt to get aid for a person who has been injured."

Police are asking for any witnesses to the collision on Monday night to call them at 301-279-8000.
