Sheriff's Office: Girl struck by vehicle in St. Mary's County; driver attacked afterwards
LEXINGTON PARK, Md. - An elderly driver was assaulted in a St. Mary's County neighborhood after authorities said she struck a 10-year-old girl with her vehicle Wednesday afternoon.
The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to the 46000 block of Yorktown Road in Lexington Park at around 3 p.m. after the collision was reported.
According to the sheriff's office, 72-year-old Linda Glaser was driving a 2003 GMC Envoy traveling south on Yorktown Road in the area of Suwanne Place where an ice truck was stopped on the opposite side of the road. As the driver was passing the ice cream truck, the 10-year-old girl ran into the roadway from behind the truck and was struck by Glaser.
After the girl was hit, the 72-year-old driver was attacked by at least one person in the neighborhood afterwards, officials said.
The 10-year-old girl was transported to a local trauma center with what the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office described as incapacitating injuries.
The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Collision Reconstruction Unit responded to the scene of the crash to conduct its investigation.
The sheriff's office said the assault of the driver is also under investigation.
