Search for missing swimmer in Potomac River suspended until Thursday morning

Rescue units have suspended a search for a missing swimmer in the Potomac River until Thursday morning.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer tweeted that two men in their 20s went cliff diving into the water from the Virginia shoreline near Sandy Landing. One of the men was able to get out of the water while the other victim remains missing after apparently getting caught in the current and was not seen again.

Rescue boats from Virginia and Maryland were deployed for an extensive search of the river and along the shorelines Wednesday afternoon. A U.S. Park Police helicopter was assisting in the search through the air.
