Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station re-opens

WASHINGTON - After two days of closures for inspections, the Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station re-opened Sunday at noon.

The station closed Friday after two incidents of debris and concrete falling from the mezzanine ceiling forced Metro to bring in a third-party expert to assess the structure.

For two days, engineers visually inspected the station and determined that there were no concerns that would pose a hazard to the public.

Experts concluded that the loose concrete was a result of environmental elements and repaired the damage. They also added quarter-inch safety/debris netting across the length of the station as a precautionary measure.

Metro says additional, more wide-ranging inspections will continue for several weeks in order to devise a long-term solution for repairing the damage and preventing more in the future.
