Proclamation, tributes begin a weekend of remembrance for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The president used the moment to praise Dr. King for standing up for the rights of African Americans.
A member of the King family was present at the event.
Isaac Newton Farris, Jr addressed the media along with the president.

In Georgia, the State Capitol building hosted a tribute to the civil rights leader.
The celebration comes ahead of Monday's official holiday celebration which marks the 50th anniversary of King's assassination.
Friday's tribute featured musical performances and speeches from Georgia lawmakers, King Center officials, and Atlanta area religious leaders
The goal is to honor Dr. King's legacy and encourage individuals to continue to be drum majors for justice and equality.
Monday, the King Center will host a rally near Auburn Avenue and Peachtree Street as well as a moderated talk about racial issues in America.
