Prince George's County man shot and killed while breaking into home, police say

A man was shot and killed after he broke into a home in Prince George's County, according to officials.

Prince George's County police said 55-year-old David William Taylor, Sr. broke into a Temple Hills home and was shot by a resident early Wednesday morning. Taylor fled the scene, but later collapsed in a nearby backyard in the 4300 block of 23rd Place, according to investigators.

Officials said they were initially called for a welfare check for an unresponsive man, but when officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Taylor suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they have spoken to the resident at the home where Taylor was shot. Authorities say they are discussing any potential criminal charges with the State's Attorney's Office.

Initially, police said the case was being investigated as a homicide, but later referred to it as a death investigation.
