Police: Victims bound, held captive overnight during Silver Spring home invasion robbery

Police are investigating a home invasion robbery and assault where a family was bound and held hostage inside a Montgomery County apartment.

According to investigators, two men and a young boy were inside their apartment in the 8800 block of Manchester Road in Silver Spring at around 9 p.m. Tuesday when five suspects knocked on their door. After the victims let them into their home, two women who also live at the apartment arrived separately at the apartment a short time later.

Police said the suspects then bound the adult victims and held them captive in the residence overnight until the following morning.

At around 8 a.m., one of the suspects stabbed a male victim with a knife. However, the victim was able to disarm the suspect and caused the other suspects to flee from the home, according to police. The victims then called 911.

The victim who was assaulted was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"One of the victims work at a check cashing business in this area," said Montgomery County Police Capt. Paul Starks. "Detective believe that is why she was singled out and that is why this family was singled out. They were able to get into the apartment using a ruse and a trick to get in there. And then, detectives believe they were trying to get into the business itself later overnight in order to steal from that business."

Detectives are investigating what happened during the night when the family was being held captive.

It is unclear if the suspects got away with any property.

Police said one of the suspects is described as a black male in his 20s, 5'7" to 5'8" tall with a medium build. He was wearing a white t-shirt and blue jeans.

A second suspect is described as a black male in his 20s wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans.

The other three suspects are described as black males in their 20s.
