Planned ‘Drag Queen Story Hour' drawing mixed reaction in St. Mary's County

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. (FOX 5 DC) -- A "Drag Queen Story Hour," planned for this Sunday in St. Mary's County, is drawing a mixed reaction. The event will be held at the Lexington Park Public Library.

Some are people divided on whether or not it should be happening at the library.

"I think it's okay as long as it's not pushing a particular agenda. If they're just some folks dressed up having story time, story time's great," one man told FOX 5.

This is the first event of its kind happening in this conservative section of St. Mary's County.

According to their Evite, the organizers behind the program, Southern Maryland Area Secular Humanists (SMASH) and PFLAG, say the target audience is three to nine years old and is meant to capture their imagination and give kids positive and unabashedly queer, role models.

"I am a millennial and many people in my generation are perfectly fine with that. I'm not really one of them, per se, and I won't take my children to that," one woman told FOX 5.

It is important to note that officials at the library told FOX 5 that they are not official sponsors of the event, but they are holding space available because it is open to the public.
