Operation Tohidu offers retreat for veterans, active military members suffering from PTSD
WASHINGTON - A special program in Maryland is looking to help those who've served in our armed forces while they battle posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Operation Tohidu is a free, week-long retreat and rehabilitation program in Charles County, Maryland for veterans and active duty military suffering from PTSD.
The program, provided by Melwood Veterans Services, is by veterans, for veterans and is open to all active duty military members and vets.
The program says of its staff, 80 percent of staff served and have struggled with PTSD.
Women who have served in the military have been able to receive treatment in the program as victims of sexual assault. Half of the female participants in the program have identified with sexual trauma in the military.
Tohidu is a Cherokee word meaning peace of mind, body, and spirit. The program focuses on the impact of stress on the brain, and helps individuals develop coping skills with activities to help them grow within their comfort zone.
The five-day retreat includes bonding activities like a ropes course, horseback riding, kayaking, and other challenges. There are couples retreats as well as treats for men and women.
