Officer struck by vehicle overnight; driver faces DUI charges
GAITHERSBURG, Md. - A Montgomery County Police officer is recovering after being struck by a vehicle overnight.
Police say the incident happened around 1 a.m. near Midcounty Highway and Montgomery Village Avenue in Gaithersburg. Police were trying to stop the vehicle which pulled over into a driveway. When officers approached on foot, the driver backed out of the driveway and struck one of them. One officer discharged their weapon, striking the vehicle.
Officers pursued the vehicle until the driver bailed out and led them on a short foot chase.
Police say the driver was quickly apprehended and was transported to a nearby hospital after complaining of an injury. Investigators say the driver faces DUI and assault charges.
The officer suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
