Officer struck by alleged drunk driver while helping disabled motorist

A St. Mary's County Sheriff's deputy is recovering after being struck by a vehicle driven by an alleged drunk driver.

The incident happened Wednesday around 1:20 a.m. on Chaptico Road near Budds Creek Road.

Police say the deputy, identified as Corporal Shaun Carberry, pulled over to assist a motorist when the suspected drunk driver veered off of the roadway and struck the disabled car. Authorities say Carberry pushed the motorist to safety before being struck by the vehicle himself.

21-Michael Austin Mattingly was identified as the driver of the striking vehicle. He remained on the scene and was charged with Driving Under the Influence.

Carberry was transported to Prince George's Hospital where he remains with non-life threatening injuries.
