The shooting occurred in Christian Funes’ front yard. He was downstairs when the encounter unfolded.
What they're saying:
"I heard three shots ring out, basically," Funes said. "I hurried up, ran upstairs— because I was trying to make sure my family was safe— and told everybody to get down. That’s when I tried to peek to see what was going on. That’s when I seen two PG cruisers basically blocking in the car, and it just started getting hectic after that. Like, they blocked off the whole street, was like more than 20 police cars."
Funes then watched as officers attempted lifesaving measures on the wounded driver in his yard.
"They gave them CPR for about like five to ten minutes until the ambulance came, and that's when the ambulance took over and that's when they transported them out of there," Funes recalled.
He noted that the victim appeared to be a man in his 20s or 30s.
"I feel bad for the family; my heart goes out to them. And it's not something you wanna see. You don't wanna see nothing tragic like that, especially in front of your house," Funes added.
What's next:
In a statement released after the incident, Prince George’s County Police wrote: "For reasons still under investigation, an officer on scene discharged their service weapon striking the driver, who is an adult male. We extend our sincere condolences to his family."
The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division is now investigating the shooting. Authorities are searching for additional witnesses and video, noting that officers were wearing body-worn cameras during the incident. Police expect to release the driver's identity soon.
