Emergency juvenile curfew in effect at National Harbor
An emergency curfew at the National Harbor is officially in effect. It comes after a weekend of wild behavior, involving teenagers along the waterfront. Kids as young as 10 years old were allegedly out past midnight, unsupervised. FOX 5's Homa Bash has the story.
NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. - An emergency teen curfew at National Harbor in Maryland took effect Friday evening.
No children, under 16, are allowed unsupervised from 5 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekends.
On Friday night, Prince George's County police were out in full force, making sure the teens complied.
Weekend chaos at National Harbor prompts emergency teen curfew in Prince George's County
After a weekend of chaos at the National Harbor, Prince George's County leaders are moving forward with emergency legislation to enforce a stricter curfew for juveniles.
The emergency order is in response to incidents like the one last weekend where chaos broke out as an estimated 800 teenagers took over National Harbor. Kids as young as 10 years old were reportedly out past midnight.
The curfew holds adults accountable as well. Unsupervised kids and teens will be asked to call someone to pick them up or leave the way they came. If they don't follow the rules, parents could face a fine.
Prince George's County Police Chief Malik Aziz explained that under the curfew law, which has been in place since 1995, it's $50 for the first time a teen is out late, $100 for the second time, $250 for the third time.
Chief Aziz told FOX 5 that they're doing an hour-by-hour assessment and they'll decide whether to scale back or add resources moving forward.
