Md. man used sophisticated selfie stick to record neighbor, police say

A Bethesda man is accused of using a makeshift selfie stick to record videos of a woman who lived above him.

It allegedly happened several times over the course of two years.

Authorities say a 58-year-old neighbor caught 60-year-old Donald Beard in the act and called police.

"This is a little more elaborate than just your average everyday selfie stick you see. This was a fairly long pole to reach several feet with a camera mounted on top and secured in such a way that it was well thought out," said Officer Rick Goodale with Montgomery County Police.

While searching Beard's electronic devices, detectives say they uncovered 16 videos of the woman, including one clip that showed her naked. Beard is facing four charges, including using a camera to record a private residence.

According to court documents, Beard told police he wanted to collect evidence of the woman spending time with married men so he could tell their wives.

Beard's attorney says his client will plead not guilty. He is due back in court July 23.
