WALKERSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- A private security officer is in critical condition after he was shot repeatedly while sitting in a car outside a Frederick County Goodwill store where he worked.

Maryland State Police say 42-year-old Gerald Campbell of Frederick was shot by a masked man around 9:30 p.m. Thursday. The assailant is still at large.

Campbell is at Shock Trauma in Baltimore.

The store in Walkersville is run by Frederick-based Goodwill Monocacy (mah-NAH'-kah-see) Valley. Spokeswoman Leigh Adams says Campbell had recently been hired for the new safety personnel position. She says he rotated among the eight retail stores in the organization.

Adams says the organization has received an outpouring of supportive messages from local businesses and community members, and from Goodwill organizations around the country.
