As a kid, DC-area native Rob Scheer was so upset going into foster care to see all his belongings in a trash bag.

Now, since becoming a parent to four children who were all adopted out of foster homes, Scheer has been on a mission to put a proper travel case in the hands of every kid in foster care.

"This just shouldn't happen here. Especially here in one of the richest areas we've ever seen," said Scheer, who lives in Montgomery County.

His inspiring story has been shared across the globe, including Ellen DeGeneres and Upworthy.

Through his organization, Comfort Cases, Scheer and his team have delivered 30,000 cases to kids in foster care.

Each kid gets a backpack or duffel bag with pajamas, blankets, stuffed animals, dental and hygiene kits, journals with pens/pencils or coloring books with crayons, and books.

Scheer says putting the cases together is a community effort.

"We're always looking for community groups and organizations and businesses to sponsor a packing party," said Scheer.

"The most important thing to me is that blanket. And the reason my son Grayson when he was five years old and started charity he said dad we have to put a blanket in there, and I said 'why a blanket? These kids aren't cold' he said no, dad, when they wrap themselves up in that blanket they know we love them. It's comfort."

Comfort Cases is holding a gala and fundraiser on May 12 at the Marriott Marquis in Washington DC and FOX 5's own Gwen Tolbart is being honored as the organization's Champion Of The Year.

Proceeds will fund the purchase and delivery of thousands of Comfort Cases for youth as young as newborns up to the age of 21 in foster care.

The night will feature a silent auction and performances by The Como Brothers band and comedian Alec Mapa.

More information, including tickets, sponsorships and auction donations can be found on Comfort Cases' website.
