MARC train disabled due to diesel fuel spill; hundreds of passengers stranded for hours

A MARC passenger train carrying around 600 passengers is disabled on the tracks in Rockville due to a diesel fuel spill, fire officials said.

The fuel leak has been contained and a hazmat team is on the scene, but the train was stopped for several hours near the Nicholson Lane overpass Wednesday evening.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer said two rescue trains were moved into place to transfer the stranded passengers. The first train arrived just after 7:40 p.m. to unload some passengers while the second train came over a half hour later to remove the remaining riders.

A passenger on board the disabled train has told FOX 5 that there is no air conditioning on the train and the lights are out after power was cut. There is also some crowding after some passengers were told to move out of a train car in the front of the train.

Piringer said there has been no fire or injuries reported.
