Man passes away after shooting himself during Fairfax Hospital incident

Police and emergency crews responded to Inova Fairfax Hospital Tuesday night for a report of a patient with a gun.

They said the call came in at 8:45 p.m.

According to police, the 64-year-old man, identified by police as Thomas Wimmer, had suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but he refused to surrender the weapon.

Eventually, they were able to de-escalate the situation, and secure the man.

After the man had been contained, he received medical treatment.

Shortly before 11 p.m., police indicated via Twitter that the man had succumbed to a self-inflicted gunshot injury.

Around 11:30 p.m., the hospital released a statement saying operations at the hospital had returned to normal.
