WHITE OAK, Md. - A man is dead following an afternoon shooting on Thursday in White Oak that triggered an intensive investigation by Montgomery County Police.
What we know:
Officers were called around 2 p.m. to the 1700 block of January Drive, near the intersection of January Drive and February Circle just off Route 29.
Police arrived and found a man suffering from serious injuries. They immediately began rendering life-saving aid, but despite their efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. He has since been identified as Rafael Jeremias Brewster, 32, of Beltsville.
In the hours following the shooting, police searched the surrounding neighborhood for witnesses, evidence, and surveillance video.
Aerial coverage from SkyFox showed an extensive police presence.
Nearly four hours after the shooting, Montgomery County homicide detectives served a search warrant at a second-story apartment nearby.
Crime scene investigators were seen combing through the unit and removing bags of evidence. Among the items seized was a heavy safe, which Montgomery County Fire EMS personnel helped to open by sawing directly through it onsite. It remains unclear what, if anything, was recovered from inside the safe.
Four individuals, two men and two women, were detained inside the apartment during the execution of the search warrant. They have not been charged in connection with the murder.
The rapid police response and apartment raid left neighbors shaken. Some expressed discomfort and outrage over the violence occurring in their community. Others noted how unsettling it is to see a major police operation unfold next door.
Authorities have not yet released the victim's identity, and they have not disclosed a potential motive or the events leading up to the gunfire.
The investigation remains active. Anyone with information regarding the fatal shooting is urged to contact the Montgomery County Police Department.
