Man dies at New Carrollton station after falling down escalator, officials say

Amtrak says a man was found dead at the New Carrollton Amtrak station Tuesday morning after he fell while walking up the "down" escalator.

There appears to not have been a specific medical emergency that precipitated the man's death, as previously reported by police.

Prince George's County police say the incident happened at around 2 a.m. at the Amtrak station at 4300 Garden City Dr. The Amtrak station is located beside the Metro station.

Amtrak says police reviewed video footage, which showed the man climbing up the down escalator. They say he reached the top and fell backward and struck his head.

Amtrak said the issue did not impact Amtrak services.

Pieces of clothing were found stuck in the escalator when FOX 5 crews arrived on the scene Tuesday morning.

Police have not been able to confirm if the man was a passenger or a train station employee.
