Man arrested after crashing into police cruiser in Maryland

BURTONSVILLE, Md. (AP) -- Montgomery County police say a man has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after hitting a police cruiser that was stopped while officers helped another motorist.

Police said in a statement Wednesday that the crash happened Saturday night in Burtonsville. Police say officers were providing traffic control at a mosque when a woman approached and said her car's engine wouldn't restart. Police say they parked a marked cruiser behind the disabled vehicle and activated the car's emergency lights.

Police say the driver of a 2006 Kia Sedona rear-ended the cruiser and the force of the collision caused the cruiser to hit the disabled vehicle.

Police identified the driver of the Kia as 56-year-old Pedro Gaona Vera of Laurel, Maryland. It was unclear if Vera has an attorney.
