Maryland man accused of shooting, killing rideshare driver on New Year's Eve arrested

WASHINGTON - A man has been arrested in connection to a New Year’s Day shooting that left a rideshare driver dead in Cottage City, Md.
Prince George’s County Police say 21-year-old Brandon Leonard has been charged with the murder of 36-year-old Oluwatosin Adetula.
Adetula was working as a rideshare driver when he was shot around 10:40 p.m. on Jan. 1 in the 3300 block of Bladensburg Road.
Officers found him in a parking lot suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries six days later, on Jan. 7.
Following an investigation, detectives were able to obtain an arrest warrant for Leonard. The PGPD’s Fugitive Unit found Leonard in Winchester, Va., and he was taken into custody on Wednesday, Jan. 15.

Leonard is charged with first and second-degree murder and related charges. He remains in Winchester pending extradition to Prince George’s County.
Adetula’s family described him as a hardworking man. He was also a new father – his baby just 4-months-old.
"This has shattered our family," Adetula’s mother told FOX 5.
According to a law enforcement source, Adetula was on the phone with a relative just before the shooting.
The relative reportedly heard the suspect demand that Adetula "turn down the radio" followed by the victim’s plea, "please don’t shoot me," before gunfire erupted.
Shell casings were recovered from the scene but investigators have not yet determined whether Adetula was targeted, if it was a robbery or if the suspect was a rideshare passenger.
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
