Trump served as the 45th President of the United States, first elected in 2016. Trump is taking over office from President Joe Biden, who won the contentious 2020 election after serving as vice president under President Barack Obama from 2008-2016.
Inauguration Ceremony
Timeline:
Vice President-elect J.D. Vance first stepped forward on the Inaugural platform to repeat the oath of office at 12 p.m. Trump then took the oath of office.
Trump's inauguration was moved indoors due to snow expected Sunday and freezing temperatures Monday.
The extreme temperatures, frigid winds, and icy conditions expected from a blast of arctic air and anticipated snow over the weekend prompted the move. The Rotunda was prepped over the weekend as the inclement weather alternative for each inauguration, the Associated Press reported.
Following the swearing-in ceremony, Trump delivered an address to the nation as he prepares to govern for the next four years.
Trump then gathered with aides and lawmakers for the President’s Signing Room Ceremony at the U.S. Capitol to sign executive orders or memorandums.
Shortly after taking the oath of office, Trump's administration released a list of his main priorities and the president said he would sign more than 200 executive actions on his first day in office in a massive, record-setting first wave of policy priorities focused on border security, energy, reducing the cost of living for American families, ending DEI programs across the federal government, and more, according to Fox News.
The traditional inaugural luncheon followed, attended by Trump, Vance, Senate leaders and JCCIC members.

Celebration at Capital One:
After the luncheon, Trump headed over to Capital One Arena for the presidential parade.
"We will open Capital One Arena on Monday for LIVE viewing of this Historic event, and to host the Presidential Parade. I will join the crowd at Capital One, after my Swearing In," said Trump Friday. "All other events will remain the same, including the Victory Rally at Capital One Arena, on Sunday at 3 P.M. (Doors open at 1 P.M.—Please arrive early!), and all three Inaugural Balls on Monday evening."
Crowds began gathering outside of Capital One Arena early Monday morning.
The event was expected to start around 3 p.m. but Trump and Vance didn't arrive until just after 5 p.m. Trump is expected to speak at Capital One Arena as part of the "Presidential Parade" that was moved indoors.
During the event, Trump signed multiple orders. The Associated Press reports that those orders were on:
- Halting 78 Biden-era executive actions
- A regulatory freeze preventing bureaucrats from issuing regulations until the Trump administration has full control of the government
- A freeze on all federal hiring except for military and a few other essential areas
- A requirement that federal workers return to full-time in-person work
- A directive to every department and agency to address the cost of living crisis
- Withdrawal from the Paris climate treaty
- A government order restoring freedom of speech and preventing censorship of free speech
- Ending the "weaponization of government against the political adversaries of the previous administration"
Following his flurry of signings, Trump left Capital One Arena to head to the White House in a motorcade along Pennsylvania Avenue just after 7 p.m. Officials stressed there would be no ceremony during his journey.
The president made his official return to the White House, walking through the doors joined by his wife, his son Barron, and his father-in-law.
