Light snow in DC area coats ground Friday; warmer weekend ahead

WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) - Light snow is falling in the D.C. region Friday and the cold temperatures could mean what lands on the ground will stick.

FOX 5's Mike Thomas says a winter weather system from the west will move into the area in the morning with the steadiest of the snow falling around the 10 a.m. hour. The system is expected to center from D.C. to areas north. Areas to the south may not see any precipitation at all. The system looks like it will break up once we're into the mid-afternoon.

While we don't expect to see a lot of snow, Thomas says, the issue will be the cold temperatures. Any snow that happens to fall at a steady pace could coat the ground rather quickly, he says.

In the D.C. area, we could see a coating to an inch of snow, Thomas says. North of Baltimore and closer to the Pennsylvania line, an inch to three inches are possible. Areas closer to the mountains to the west could receive up to six inches. Winter Weather Advisories are in place for D.C. and much of the areas to the north and west until 3 p.m.

This may be the last day we'll have to contend with winter weather for a while, Thomas says. Sunny skies and warmer temperatures take hold this weekend. Temperatures in the 60 are expected early next week.
