Large sinkhole opens in Fairfax roadway after water main breaks

Water service has been restored to over a dozen homes after they were left without water, as a massive sinkhole repair project continues to affect residents along Twinbrook Road in Fairfax County.

Fairfax Water says repairs will take 24 hours.

Fairfax County Police reported the initial sinkhole around 8:40 a.m. in the 4500 block of Twinbrook Road in Fairfax.

Emergency crews found that several water main breaks along that roadway had caused the sinkhole and a large-scale repair project was required.

Over 230 feet of roadway is currently being repaired. Nineteen homes are reported to be without water at this time.

It is unclear when vehicles will be able to pass through the roadway. Motorists can expect traffic delays around the area while work to repair both the break and road continue.
