Human skeletal remains discovered in Fairfax County

Police say skeletal remains that are believed to be of an adult human were found in the Alexandria area of Fairfax County.

The remains were found by a construction crew in the 2900 block of East Lee Avenue nearby Richmond Highway at around 10:15 a.m. Thursday, according to police.

Police say the construction workers were cleaning up some brush in a wooded area next to a business under construction when they located a wallet, and then the skeletal remains shortly afterwards. The wallet contained an identification card for a shelter in the Northern Virginia area.

Homicide and crime scene detectives responded to the scene after being contacted by the crew.

"Our detectives are trying to piece together what happened," said Fairfax County Lt. Eli Cory. "We are working with our medical examiner's office to determine for sure the identity of the skeletal remains."
