Hiram family sparks special needs awareness

A local family is taking their fight for special needs children to Washington, DC. Their inspiration - stands less than 2 feet tall.

"Pure sunshine' is how family members describe 2-and-a-half-year-old KJ Moses. In specially made shoes, he's walking which is a major achievement.

Angela Moses explained, "With my other two kids, I took so much for granted. For him, I was like, 'Let's get a cake. He's walking!'"

KJ has Down syndrome. A diagnosis his parents received from doctors halfway through pregnancy. Medical specialists explained the long list of challenges KJ would face.

"They didn't talk about how his smile would be such a blessing," remembered Moses.

Moses is focused on her son's future. She says legislation passed in Georgia this past session is a step in the right direction. The Able Act - - helps those with special needs receive government services - a little bit more easily. She and KJ's dad are headed to DC this weekend. They'll tell legislators what a day in their world is like, and try to help spark change on the federal level.

They're not just advocating for those with Down syndrome, but for all children with disabilities. Because getting the help that's available means jumping through a lot of hoops, a lot of paperwork, and an ability to speak the language of lawyers and legislators.

FOX 5's Kaitlyn Pratt asked, "What does a future for KJ look like?" Moses answered, "I want him to spread his sunshine. Have financial freedom and live in the environment of his choosing."
