Heavy winds cause flooding in Ocean City

OCEAN CITY, Md. - (AP) -- In Ocean City, where waves have reached heights of ten feet due to coastal flooding over the weekend, officials say public works employees will begin a cleanup effort that will last roughly two weeks.

Officials in a statement warned citizens to avoid the boardwalk, the beach and Inlet Lot, which will be closed to the public until further notice. Officials say road closures could continue over the next several days, and are continuing to urge people not to swim in the ocean due to strong rip currents.

The National Weather Service says coastal communities in Maryland should expect light flooding throughout the day Sunday and into Monday.

National Weather Service meteorologist Luis Rosa says flooding is continuing in Annapolis and in other parts of the Mid-Atlantic region, including Alexandria and parts of Washington. In St. Mary's County in Maryland, flooding has reached two feet in some areas, and is expected to continue over the next couple of high tide cycles. Baltimore too is expected to experience light flooding Sunday night.
