Handicap parking spaces at Md. shopping center finally cleared out several days after blizzard

POTOMAC, Md. - A Montgomery County mother attempting to get medicine for her daughter with cerebral palsy after being snowed in for days is frustrated after handicapped parking spaces at a Potomac shopping center were not cleared of snow.

Shelley Neiss-Kramm sent FOX 5 pictures of the snow-covered parking spaces at the Potomac Village Shopping Center after attempting to park there on Thursday.

"Shame on you," said Neiss-Kramm. "It's something that everybody kind of takes for granted. You don't know when your life is going to take that change, you don't know what tomorrow is going to bring, it might be yourself, it might be a parent, it might be your child."

After we made several calls to the property management group, Donahoe Real Estate Services, that were not returned, a bobcat finally came by Friday afternoon and cleared the parking spaces.

We reached out to the Maryland Department of Disabilities and they told us businesses and public facilities are responsible for making sure parking is available for those with disabilities.

If you come across a snow-covered handicap space, the first thing you should do is contact those responsible for the upkeep such as the parking lot management company or business owner. If you don't get an answer there, you should call your local commission or Office on Disability for further assistance. A list of these offices can be found on the Maryland Department of Disabilities website.
