Goldendoodle 'Kodi' stolen in broad daylight in DC

Authorities are asking for the public’s help in finding Kodi, a Goldendoodle support dog, who was stolen Sunday afternoon in Northeast D.C.

The backstory:

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the incident occurred around 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 12 in the 800 block of 26th Street NE.

Video footage shared with investigators shows an unidentified woman taking the dog after it wandered out of sight.

The woman who allegedly wore her hair in braids, was reportedly driving a black Jeep when she left the area with Kodi.

Kodi is a brown mini Goldendoodle with distinct features: part of his left paw is missing, and his left ear is split.

He was last seen wearing a gray reflective vest and a Christmas bow tie.

The dog’s owner, Dawn Pelt, said Kodi wandered off near the Spingarn Football Field near Browne Education Campus.

Pelt called Kodi her support animal and expressed her deep concern.

"I'm hurt," she told FOX 5. "It's hard to go throughout the day without him. I've had him so long. He's two. I have had him since he was eight weeks, every single day. You know, he sleeps with me every night. So it's hard to maneuver."

What you can do:

Please do the right thing," Pelt pleaded. "If you have a conscience and you know you want to be a good person, just please do the right thing and return him to his family."

The Metropolitan Police Department has launched an active investigation and is working to identify the suspect and the vehicle involved. Police are urging anyone with information about Kodi’s whereabouts to come forward but advise against direct action. Tips can be reported by calling (202) 727-9099 or texting the Department's TEXT TIP LINE at 50411.

A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in this case.
