FOX Beat: Ridley Scott share experience directing 'The Martian'

'The Martian,' directed by Ridley Scott, follows an astronaut left behind on the Red Planet after he is presumed dead by his crew. FOX 5's Kevin McCarthy sat down with Scott to talk about the way this film was made and if it could have been done without the use of digital graphics.

"God is in the details, as always," he said. Scott said he added effects to create the sky, dust twisters, and dust formations. Without those effects, it wouldn't have worked. He said in his 1979 sci-fi thriller, 'Alien,' paintings were used to create the backgrounds.

Scott told McCarthy that his 'film school' training came during his time in Europe when he worked directing commercials. It was a fast-paced learning experience that taught him how to quickly get moving.
