Florida man sentenced 4 months for Trump Inauguration Day rioting

WASHINGTON - The first felony plea sentencing following the riots on President Donald Trump's Inauguration Day was handed out Friday.

The defendant, Dane Powell, was sentenced to four months in prison pleaded guilty to felony rioting and felony assault on a police officer.

The 31-year-old Florida man was one of 234 people arrested for various incidents that took place on January 20 as protesters clashed with police in downtown D.C. several hours after President Trump was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States.

Windows at businesses in downtown were smashed and a limousine was set on fire as police in riot gear were in the streets trying to control the crowd.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia's said Powell was the first defendant to plead guilty to felony charges while 15 others have pleaded guilty to misdemeanor rioting offenses. Charges against 20 other people have been dismissed.

Around 100 protesters were expected to gather at the courthouse Friday morning.
