Firefighter injured in Derwood house fire

A firefighter was injured battling a fire at a two-story house in Derwood.

Over 75 firefighters responded to the blaze in the 7700 block of Yellowstone Way at around 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer says the firefighter suffered neck and back injuries from a fall. His injuries are considered non-life-threatening and is expected to be okay.

No one was home at the time of the fire and no one else was injured.

Piringer says the fire is under control and the home suffered significant damage.

The subfreezing conditions caused some troubles for the firefighters as Piringer says a couple of fire hydrants were frozen.

Investigators believe the fire was accidental and caused by misplaced smoking materials in a potted plant outside of the home.
