Driver who killed 3 children on Indian Head Highway in Prince George’s County sentenced to 22 years

A driver who rear-ended a vehicle on Indian Head Highway in Prince George's County, killing three young children and seriously injuring their parents, was sentenced to 22 years in prison on Thursday.

Thomas Hawks, of White Plains, Maryland, was drunk behind the wheel when he struck a vehicle carrying Alexis and Juanita Mejia, along with their three children on Dec. 30, 2018.

According to officials, Hawks' blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit.

He pleaded guilty to three counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of causing serious bodily harm.

The Mejia family was headed home from church before the crash that killed 5-year-old twins Alexander and Rosalie, and their 1-year-old brother, Isaac Abraham.

Juana and Alexis Mejia were seriously injured, each spending more than a week in the hospital.

A GoFundMe for the Mejia family has raised more than $115,000.
