DC, Virginia, Maryland residents will need ‘REAL ID’ to board planes by October 2020

Residents in the District, Virginia, and Maryland will all need “REAL ID” credentials to board airplanes by October 2020.

The REAL ID licenses and identification cards in both states and the District have a star in the upper right corner indicating that they comply with federal standards.

In addition to boarding planes, the new IDs will enable residents to enter secured federal facilities.

In order to obtain a REAL ID, you can go to your local Department of Motor Vehicles in Virginia and DC, or the MDOT MVA in Maryland and present appropriate documents indicating residency.
