DC police horse dies, served 10 years on the force

The D.C. Police Horse Mounted Unit is grieving the loss of a beloved four-legged veteran who served 10 years on the force.

Thunder, a Clydesdale, galloped into the Washington Metropolitan Police Department 10 years ago. At 17 feet and weighing in at 2,000 pounds, the chocolate brown beauty-- with his massive white dipped hoofs and snout-- was an extraordinary sight to behold in the streets.

During his service, the gentle giant and his partner Ofc. Moon participated in many historical and honorary events that included multiple inaugurations, cherry blossom parades, the Women's March on Washington and the visit of the Pope.

With heavy hearts, on Feb. 14, the force said their final goodbyes to the noble steed. He passed away at the age of 16.

The department took to social media to announce their loss.

Thunder: Clydesdale 17/2 hands tall, 2000lbs 16 years old, 10 years on the job for the Metropolitan Police Department Washington DC. E.O.W. 2/14/18 0300 hrs. RIP

We thank you for your service, Thunder! Gallop into to paradise, over the rainbow bridge.
