DC celebrates its signature Go-Go sound on ‘Rare Essence Day'

In 2016, DC's Mayor Muriel Bowser declared May 6th "Rare Essence Day" in celebration of the legendary Go-Go band's 40th anniversary and to honor the signature sound of the District.

Inspired by the late Godfather of Go-Go, Chuck Brown, Rare Essence was started over four decades ago while the members were in elementary school at St. Thomas Moore Catholic School. At that time, according to Bowser, they called themselves the "Young Dynamos."

Now, Rare Essence, "has provided the distinct sound to a devoted fan base that spans across many generations" making themselves the city's premier Go-Go band.

Rare Essence's hit songs include "Overnight Scenario," "Work the Walls," "Body Snatchers," "Back up Against the Wall," and "Lock-It."
