DC area snow, sleet, and freezing rain Wednesday night into Thursday morning

The Washington, D.C. area is preparing for a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain expected to start late Wednesday and continue into Thursday morning.

FOX 5 meteorologist Taylor Grenda reports a slight chance of snow Wednesday afternoon, with colder temperatures compared to the milder conditions seen toward the end of the weekend. "It will be very cold today. It’s going to be a struggle to even get to 40 degrees," she said.

Winter Weather Advisory Issued for D.C. Area

The wintry mix is forecast to begin Wednesday night after 9 p.m. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 10 a.m. Thursday for D.C., central, northeast, and northern Maryland, as well as central, northern, and northwest Virginia.

Sleet and Ice Accumulations Expected

The National Weather Service predicts sleet accumulations of up to one inch and ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch across parts of the area, including along portions of the I-95 corridor.

Steady freezing rain is expected overnight, potentially impacting the Thursday morning commute and leading to school closings and delays. Drivers should be prepared for slippery road conditions.

Temperatures are expected to warm Thursday morning, transitioning from freezing rain to rain.
